Both 2022 and 2023 have brought food and energy security sharply into focus.

The global energy crisis and more extreme weather have highlighted the vulnerability of the legacy energy and food systems that we have depended on. These challenges are likely to become more onerous as the planet continues to warm and the global population grows. Can technological solutions in the form of vertical farming and clean energy sufficiently address these challenges and provide security as climate change impacts become increasingly severe?

Speakers

Joe Crehan

Investment Manager, Greenbank

Joe is an investment manager at Greenbank, specialising in managing ethical portfolios on behalf of private clients, trusts and charities. He is a chartered member of the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment and has been awarded the Institute’s masters level Chartered Wealth Manager qualification.

He is the renewable energy sector specialist for the Greenbank team and advises within the energy workstream of the Rathbones Thematic Research Initiative on climate change.

Joe joined Greenbank in 2014 having previously worked for the educational charity Teach First as a secondary school Physics teacher. He is a school governor at St Helen’s College and is a Physics and Philosophy graduate with a BSc and MA from Bristol University.

David Farquhar

CEO, Intelligent Growth Solutions (IGS)

David joined Intelligent Growth Solutions as CEO in November 2017. IGS is a Scottish-based agritech business, and David’s strategic appointment was made to raise investment through a Series A and subsequent Series B funding round, recruit a world-class management team and drive global expansion.

He is a seasoned technology entrepreneur, with a track record of driving shareholder value, based upon building an empowering, collaborative Culture as a Platform for growth. Most recently he was CEO of global SaaS vendor Workplace, leading the team through a hugely successful turnaround, transformation, growth and exit delivering a double-digit money multiple return in less than 3 years. In the past 27 years he has completed almost 30 transactions as a founder/CEO, angel investor and board director, including risk capital investments (PE, VC and angel), acquisitions and trade sales in Europe, North America and Asia.

Morag Watson

Scottish Renewables' Director of Policy

Morag has worked in climate change and sustainability policy for nearly 20 years. Morag leads Scottish Renewables’ engagement with Scottish and UK Government policy to grow Scotland’s renewable energy sector and sustain its position at the forefront of the global clean energy industry. Morag manages a team of six policy experts covering onshore and offshore wind, hydro, solar, low-carbon heat, hydrogen, wave and tidal energy in addition to planning, grid and market issues.
Morag was a Senior Policy Officer with WWF Scotland for over 10 years. During this time, she was a contributing expert to the Scottish Government’s Climate Change and Sustainable Development Action Plans, worked as an expert advisor to UNESCO and helped found Scotland’s Regional Centre of Expertise on Education for Sustainable Development.

Morag holds a degree in Environmental Geoscience from the University of Edinburgh, is a qualified Hill and Moorland Leader and lives in a self-built eco-home in Central Scotland.
