Greenbank’s head of ethical, sustainable and impact research, Kate Elliot, hosted a live lunchtime webinar which looked in detail at the issue of animal welfare in the food system, how investors integrate this issue into decision-making, and the pros and cons of alternative proteins as a potential solution. 

Kate was joined by Robert Black head of responsible investment at Chronos Sustainability, Charlie Young, ethical, sustainable and impact researcher at Greenbank and Guy Brook, assistant investment analyst at Greenbank.

Kate oversees the development and implementation of the team’s sustainability assessment framework, analysing investments against a range of environmental, social and governance criteria.  She also monitors emerging sustainability themes, sets priorities for Greenbank’s stewardship and engagement activities and has developed the team’s systems for measurement and reporting of portfolio sustainability and impact performance.  She joined Greenbank in 2007 after graduating from the University of Bristol with a Masters in Philosophy and Mathematics.

Chronos Sustainability acts as Secretariat to the Business Benchmark on Farm Animal Welfare (BBFAW), the leading global measure of farm animal welfare management, policy commitment, performance and disclosure in food companies. Robert leads on BBFAW’s work with the investor community, including running the BBFAW Global Investor Collaboration on Farm Animal Welfare.

Charlie joined Greenbank in January 2021 and sits in the ethical, sustainable and impact research team. He is responsible for monitoring and analysing investments against a range of environmental, social and governance criteria as well as jointly conducting the company’s thematic measurement and engagement projects around biodiversity, net zero and circular economy. Charlie also leads Greenbank’s animal welfare engagement workstream which involves collaboration with the Business Benchmark on Farm Animal Welfare and aims to encourage improved farm animal welfare standards across the world’s largest food companies. He holds a BASc in Economic Studies and Global Sustainable Development from the University of Warwick and a CFA Institute Certificate in ESG Investing.

Guy joined Greenbank in October 2023 as assistant investment analyst after completing the Rathbones graduate investment programme. Guy conducts equity analysis and the underpinning thematic research for both new ideas and companies in Greenbank’s investment universe. He co-wrote the Greenbank issue brief on alternative proteins and has met with leading funds in this space.  In late 2023 Guy visited a cutting-edge series B cultured meat startup.

Guy is a CFA level 2 candidate.

Sustainability update February 2025

2025 has so far seen a significant shift in the political backdrop for ESG and sustainable investing. While some financial institutions pull back from climate initiatives amid increasing political opposition, a rollback on DEI programmes emphasises the need for diversity, equity and inclusion to evolve beyond good intentions. The UK and US have refused to sign a declaration on “inclusive and sustainable” artificial intelligence (AI) following the landmark AI Safety Summit, and the EU’s Omnibus proposal to reduce the scope of regional sustainability reporting has been criticised as a deregulation setback.
